Buddha's Head in Tree Roots in Wat Mahathat - Ayutthaya, Thailand.

Wat Mahathat is located to the east of the grand palace. It is the royal temple and most sacred in Ayutthaya during the glorious time. Buddha relics were enshrined in the mahathat Chedi (the principal pagoda). This monastery was once the residence of the supreme patriarch.

This monastery was destroyed and had been burnt in the last war in AD. 1767. It had been leaved as the ruin until the present.

Amazing place in Wat Mahathat  : Buddha's Head in Tree Roots
The head was once part of a sandstone Buddha image which fell off the main body onto the ground. It was gradually trapped into the roots of a constantly growing Bodhi tree.
The stone head has rather flat and wide facial structure with thick eyebrows and big eye lids, straight wide lip, and discernible lip edge, reflecting the art of middle Ayutthaya Period, presumable around the mid of 1600s.

The largest Phra Prang in Wat Mahathat collapsed during the Ayutthaya period, but was rebuilt. It was collapsed again, Currently remain only the foundation of The largest Phra Prang.
